Mouth Cysts

A mouth cyst is a thin, fluid-filled sac located on the inside of your mouth.  It can also be called a mucous cyst or mucocele.  This sac is harmless and painless, but it can be annoying for sure!  Having a bump inside your mouth is not something you are used to. #downbythebay

Usually these cysts are found on the inside of the lips but can also appear on the tongue, palate, cheeks, floor of the mouth or around any piercings on the tongue or lips.  If the cyst is on the floor of your mouth it is called a ranula.  A cyst on the gum is called an epulis.  The cyst is filled with a clear fluid.  A dentist can usually diagnose a mucous cyst just by looking at it.

#sweetwaterdentist  The cause of a fluid sac on the lips, gums, or inside of the cheeks is believed to be sucking the tissue between your teeth.  Unintentionally sucking your cheeks or lips may prevent cysts from forming, but some cysts can appear random.  Dental Offices located in Robertsdale AL

Treatment

A mucous cyst usually doesn’t require treatment because it normally will rupture on its own.  Continue your normal oral care.

If a mouth cyst becomes uncomfortable or irritated, if it interferes with chewing, does not go away in a couple of weeks, it’s time to see a dentist!  A sterile needle may be used to open the top of the cyst to drain the fluid from it.  Eventually it will go away. Dental Offices located in Robertsdale AL

Removing a Cyst

If a dentist or oral surgeon feel it is necessary, sometimes a cyst needs to be removed.  This is especially true if the cyst returns after being opened.  Complications are very rare, and there are standard risks of surgery like infection or reaction to local anesthesia.  Speak to your dentist or dental specialist and make sure you understand the risks.

If a cyst doesn’t open on its own and you do not receive treatment, a permanent bump may form.  These bumps are harmless, but make sure to see your dentist if something new forms in your mouth and you have concerns.  Have the dentist evaluate the area by examination and x-ray.  Dental Offices located in Robertsdale AL
