A crown may be necessary to save a tooth that has suffered severely from decay, or that has a crack or chip that can't be fixed with a simple filling. A crown (many people also call a "cap") is a restorative cover that mimics the look of your tooth. Crowns are also sometimes used to improve your smile. Here at Dr. Phillip Greer's office, Sweet Water Dentistry in Fairhope, AL, we offer in office made porcelain crowns. The best part about porcelain crowns is that they are made in our office so that you can receive your crown the same day!
Dr. Phillip Greer creates custom crowns that look completely natural and match perfectly with your other teeth. He will use a shade guide with you so that you can choose the shade that you want your crown to be. At our office, instead of having to take impressions, we simply scan the area with our cerac technology to get the design of your crown. Once you receive your crown, Dr. Greer at Sweet Water Dentistry will explain to you what you need to do to care for your crown at home. You will need to continue to practice good oral hygiene to make sure that your crown lasts as long as possible.
How Long Does it Take the Dentist to Create a Crown?
After your tooth is prepared to receive the crown, it takes about an hour (per crown) to ensure your crown is designed, created, and baked. Once the crown is finished, you will return to the office, and you will have your crown permanently cemented in. To avoid damaging your crown, you should avoid chewing ice and other hard foods. It is recommended that you brush, floss, and use mouthwash at least twice a day.
