Information on White Fillings
Dr. Phillip Greer at Sweetwater Dentistry, located in Fairhope, Alabama, offers composite (tooth colored) fillings. There are two different kinds of filling material that are used in dentistry. Visit our website for more information about us and services we offer. Amalgam, which is silver filling material made up of mercury, copper, silver, and tin. Many people are getting their old amalgam fillings replaced with composite material. The second kind of fillings done in dentistry is called composite, which is a tooth colored material which is made of glass and plastic. It is a light cured material and is set while you're in the chair, so there is no waiting around for it to set. Over the years, many people have gotten their cavities filled with amalgam (silver) fillings, but at Sweetwater Dentistry, we only place composite material in teeth to restore them after removing decay of a filling in a tooth. The best thing about composite material is that it is almost impossible to detect. The dentist can choose whatever shade best matches your tooth.
What causes cavities? Well, bacteria forms in your mouth from food particles that are left on your teeth and is the cause of decay. Brushing and flossing at least twice a day is the best way to keep your teeth clean and bacteria free. The first steps in getting a cavity filled are first to have the tooth numbed. Once the tooth has been numbed, the dentist will then use his handpiece and drill out all of the decay in the tooth. Once all of the decay has been removed, an etching gel is then placed in the tooth to open up the pores in your tooth to allow a good bond between the tooth and the composite material. A bonding agent is placed, light cured, and then the composite material is set in place and hardened with a light. If you need a filling, contact us at Sweetwater Dentistry today.
