Diastema……….What Is It?
Diastema is a space or gap that is in between two teeth. Most often it is the two upper front teeth---but gaps can occur between any two teeth.
When the size of the jaw and the size of the teeth are mismatched, it can cause either an extra space between the teeth or crowding of the teeth. If the teeth are too small for the jaw bone, spaces in the middle of the teeth will occur. If the teeth are too big, then the teeth will be crowded.
Spaces develop for other reasons.
Teeth can be missing or undersized and this happens often with the upper lateral incisors (teeth by the two upper front teeth).
Diastema also can happen by an oversized labial frenum. A labial frenum is the piece of tissue that normally extend from the inside of the upper lip to the gum. It’s just above the two upper front teeth. Sometimes the labial frenum will continue to grow and then passes between the two front teeth. If this happens, it will block the natural closing of the space between the teeth. Wisdom Teeth Removal Fairhope AL
There are also habits that can lead to gaps between the teeth. Thumb sucking will pull the front teeth forward, and create gaps. Spaces also can develop from incorrect swallowing reflex. For most, the tongue presses against the roof of the mouth during swallowing. People can develop a different reflex known as a tongue thrust. When swallowing, the tongue will press against the front teeth. Over time, the pressure will push the front teeth forward and this causes spaces to develop. Wisdom Teeth Removal Fairhope AL
